Look up wine holidays that celebrate bubbly and you’ll see one for Champagne (France), Cava (Spain), Prosecco (Italy), Cap Classique, (South Africa), and Sekt (Germany/Austria) and more, but there’s never been a wine holiday to celebrate American sparkling wine—that is until now!

THE CASE FOR WHAT MAKES
AMERICAN BUBBLES SPECIAL
Although winemaking has been occurring in the United States since the 16th century, American wine as a category taken seriously in the global marketplace in terms of quality and desirability arguably didn’t really begin until an event known as The Judgment of Paris. The JoP was a wine competition held in Paris in May 1976 where comparisons of American Chardonnays vs French Chardonnays, and American Cabernet Sauvignon vs French Bordeaux were being tasted. To the wine world’s surprise, a Napa County wine rated best in each of the categories, establishing US wines as a serious wine force to be reckoned with.
These days, almost every state in the US produces wine, many of which also produce significant amounts of sparkling wine. The diversity of climates, weather, terrain, and soil--including some growing elements that are similar to famous wine growing regions around the world--means that there’s fantastic, distinctly delicious American bubbly options being produced nearby, no matter what state you’re in.

AMERICAN BUBBLES SPECIAL
And there’s more. According to beverage consulting firm Park Street, “Not only has the overall consumption of sparkling wine risen over the years, but the frequency of indulgence has also spiked, with monthly sparkling wine drinkers jumping from 56% to 72% from 2019 to 2022.” Driving that concept home specifically for the U.S. market, wine journalist Brian Freedman in a 2022 article for publication SevenFifty Daily wrote “[I}n recent years, increasing attention to quality and versatility within the [sparkling wine] category has breathed new life into American sparkling wine which has resulted in a noticeable increase in “the number of winemakers crafting sparkling wine, the range of styles they’re crafting, and the quality and ageability of the wines themselves.”
In short, there are American sparklers for every palate, at every price point, that are more than deserving of a bigger spotlight on the global wine stage. American sparkling wines are worthy of taking up more space in the wine refrigerators and cellars of Americans, as well as sparkling wine lovers all over the globe.
One last thing: July 3rd was purposefully chosen because of its proximity to the 4th of July--buy sipping sparklers on the 3rd to pop along the sparklers (and fireworks) you’ll pop on Independence Day. After all, what better beverage to celebrate a quintessentially American holiday than quintessentially American bubbly? Plus, bubbles will pair beautifully with everything from hotdogs to barbecue to goodies from the grill, and everything in between.
